“They laugh at me because i’m different; I laugh at them because they’re all the same.” I love this quote so much because it’s actually very true. Uniqueness is something that can be looked down upon, because people don’t want to accept someone who doesn’t act the way they do. You probably don’t even know you’re doing it, but before you even get to know a person you are already forming an opinion on them, like how they dress, whether they’re good-looking or not, who they date, what their skin colour is, what people say about you to other people or any other any other reason like that. This happens because we live in a prejudiced world where we won’t look twice at a person. Most people just want to fit in and be accepted by others, but sometimes the way to be accepted by others is by standing out, not being afraid to try something that might make you feel embarrassed.
What I don’t understand is, why people don’t see that the people that are different are beautiful on the inside. It shouldn’t matter if they don’t have the perfect hair or the most fashionable clothes; because what should matter is who they are as a person and what they do. The other aspect that you can take on this quote, is that you shouldn't ever let other people's opinions bring you down, especially if you have your mind set on achieving a long-term or short-term goal. The only opinion that should matter to you, is your own opinion. The sad thing is, you form an opinion over someone who is different from ourselves before you even get to know them. So, before you judge someone, think of how you would feel if someone did that to you. Try getting to know a person before you form an opinion, because that one person just might change your life.

Garbage is an issue all around the world; we have accumulated so much waste that we created an island of garbage in the Pacific Ocean. Garbage is one major cause of global warming. As most people know, global warming is a combination of things; like land pollution, greenhouse gasses and many other pollutants. Did you know that one of the major causes of global warming is something that we use every day? Now I know you were probably thinking I was going to say something about cars or power generation, but believe it or not “Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to biodegrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes". This is one of the major contributors to air pollution. "It is estimated that over 80% of all single-use water bottles used in the U.S. simply become litter," and the "U.S. landfills are overflowing with 2 million tons of discarded water bottles alone." This is contributing significantly towards land pollution, which further affects global warming. Scientists are trying to figure out something that they can use to make water bottles without using plastic and something that will biodegrade much faster than plastic will. They discovered that algae could possibly be a solution to making biodegradable water bottles; "when agar powder is added to water, it forms a jelly-like material." which can be put into a mould and it will hold its shape "as long as the bottle is full of water, but as soon as it is empty – it will begin to decompose." this would be good for making a positive impact on the environment and keeping the pollution down. Using algae can be good for the manufacturing aspect of it, because if there is a defective bottle or "if the bottom is too thin or it has a hole in it, I can just reheat it and pour it into the mould again," said Jónsson, this would save the manufacturer a lot of money and excess waste. I was mind blown when I found out that scientist could use algae as a substitute for plastic when making water bottles, it's quite ingenious actually. As I did more research, I found out that algae has a critical part on this earth, "Cyanobacteria are the earliest form of photosynthetic organisms that release oxygen into the environment, which along with algae, are responsible for approximately 70% of the oxygen produced on the planet." If algae is 'responsible for 70% of the oxygen produced' how is that possible? Well, as I kept looking more into biodegradable bottles made from algae, I came across this, "Each pound of algae we use is also consuming approximately two pounds of CO2. Therefore the algae have already made a mark on our planet improving both global water and air contamination issues." This bioplastic could be revolutionary, however, there is a problem, even though “the idea itself is very nice, but first the perfect algae doesn’t exist yet, then nobody knows how to get these molecules out of the broth, and scaling this up to industrial levels is going to be very difficult”. This is one of the problems with using algae to create a food grade products. Just because this kind of algae doesn't exist yet, doesn't mean scientists aren't trying their hardest to figure out a solution to this. I think that using algae to make bio-plastic is a very good idea, and if scientists can figure out how to make a synthetic version of the 'perfect' algae that grows fast enough, then we should bring it into industrial levels and start producing bottles made out of algae. This would be a huge step forward to solving at least one of the world's problems. Works Cited ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily. Web. 17 Oct. 2016. @dezeen. Researchers have shown that teenagers generally don’t enough sleep everyday. An average teenager needs about 9 hours of sleep; this proves that teens do actually need more sleep than adults.
Have you ever wondered what a sleep cycle is made of? Well, our brains go through 5 stages, which takes about 90 to 100 minutes to complete the one sleep cycle. A person usually experiences 5 of these sleep cycles. The first 2 stages is where a person is in a light sleep and can be woken easily: Eye movement is slow and eventually stop, heart and breathing rates slow down, and body temperature decreases. The third stage is when a person is in a deep sleep: It can be harder to wake someone up during these stages. If they are awakened, they will usually feel groggy and confused for a couple of minutes. The fourth stage is the most refreshing part during a deep sleep: In this stage your body releases hormones that contribute to growth and development. When you’re very tired this is the kind of sleep you’re craving. The last stage of sleep is REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, where other physical changes take place: During this stage breathing is rapid, the heart beats faster and the limb muscles don't move. This is when we have our most vivid dreams. Why do teens have a hard time going to bed early? If a teenager has to get up for school at 6 a.m. the next day, and a teen needs at least 9 hours of sleep to feel well rested and alert; they should being going to bed at 9 p.m. Studies have found that teenagers have trouble falling asleep that early and it's not that they don't want to go to bed that early, but that their brains are naturally working on a later schedule and aren’t ready to go to bed. On the other hand, a majority (81%) of smartphone users always have their phone switched on, even in bed and “the blue light emitted by screens on cell phones, computers, tablets, and televisions restrain the production of melatonin, the hormone that controls your sleep/wake cycle or circadian rhythm. Reducing melatonin makes it harder to fall and stay asleep.” this has a huge impact on the quality of sleep you’re getting. This is why it is recommended that you “give yourself at least 30 minutes of gadget-free transition time” before you go to sleep. There is another factor that we have to incorporate, school. School has a pretty big impact on when we go to bed and how easily we fall asleep. Students all get homework and assignments, but if they leave to the last minute like what I’m doing with this blog; then you’ll become more stressed out and stay up later to try and finish your homework. Especially knowing that you have a test the next day, because it can make some people really anxious and have a harder time falling asleep. So when we ask if teens are getting enough sleep, there really is no yes or no answer because it depends on the individual. Some teenagers are getting enough sleep, on the contrary other teenagers aren’t. Do you ever wonder what people mean when people say "live life to the fullest"? Well i’m going to break it down with a couple questions that will make you contemplate a little more on how you spend your everyday life and how you could change it to make you feel like you're living your life to the fullest.
To me, it means many things. First there are a few questions you need to ask yourself; Are you enjoying every moment of what you do, whether it’s being on vacation, hanging out with friends/family or doing chores/work? How much do you smile everyday? Lastly, how often do you take risks? Now these questions may seem pointless and off topic but they actually have a lot to do with you living your life to the fullest. Are you enjoying every moment of what you do, whether it’s being on vacation, hanging out with friends/family or doing chores/work? We often take for granted what we have. I know that I don't enjoy every moment of everything I do; but we should, because nothing lasts forever and when it’s over, it just becomes a memory. Now the question is, what kind of memory is it gonna be? When we look back at what we did we want to remember all of the times that we had fun and the moments that we enjoyed a lot. Those moments and memories will become significant enough to you that you won't easily forget them. It’s one thing to go about your everyday life, ignoring the small positive things, rather than making the most of your day celebrating small moments of happiness. Do you go about your day as if it’s just another day, doing the same old things? If so, you should spend your day as if it was your last. By seeing the little tasks in a more positive light, you will find yourself enjoying your regular day more. How much do you smile everyday? This question seems absolutely irrelevant but it’s not. Smiling is so contagious, it radiates a room. When you smile it doesn't just make you feel better but it makes everyone else feel better as well and overall it makes everyone's day just a little better. When you smile it helps make a moment worth remembering, it can bring back memories and to top that, it helps you enjoy something a lot more. So don't be afraid to smile, because the worse it'll do, is make everyone including you, feel better about what’s happening and themselves. Overall don't forget to smile and remember to “use your smile to change the world, don't let the world change your smile.” --Anonymous How often do you take risks? This question is very important because if you live your life without trying new things or taking risks, then you most probably have a very boring life. One of the best things in life is to take risks, try new things, meet new people and to have balance between work and play. When you take a risk, you aren't just having a new experience; you’re starting to live your life to the fullest. With every new thing you do, the more exciting your life becomes and the more things will change and make your life interesting. Now that you know how to live your life to the fullest, all you need to do is make some small personal improvements. You will become a much happier person once you learn how to live your life to the fullest; which can be as simple as smiling more. So, now my last question is; are you living your life to the fullest?
